New to Nose Work?

What to bring, what to focus on, and where to begin.

Start with the search.

Nose Work gives your dog a chance to hunt, solve problems, and make decisions. You can enjoy it as enrichment, build toward competition, or do both.

In my classes, we develop the dog’s desire to hunt and the handler’s ability to listen. Connection, curiosity, and confidence come first.

Keep your first kit simple.

  1. Bring rewards your dog loves. Have small, easy-to-deliver pieces ready so you can reward promptly.
  2. Bring a comfortable leash. For my classes, an 8–12 ft leash is a useful starting point. You can combine two 6 ft leashes initially.
  3. Plan for your dog’s downtime. Bring water and a comfortable, secure place to rest between turns.
  4. Ask before buying odor. Check with your instructor about when to introduce target odor and which kit to use.
